Nissan's board of directors decided on Tuesday to consider a potential alliance with its larger Japanese rival, TV Tokyo said, citing unidentified sources. The Nikkei reported that Nissan and Honda could work together on electric vehicles to better compete with Chinese rivals.
Nissan may lower annual production in the world's biggest auto market by as much as 30%, or about 500,000 cars, while Honda is looking at a 20% cut to around 1.2 million vehicles, Nikkei said.

The Japan Fair Trade Commission, which local media reported this week was investigating Nissan's conduct, said the automaker had unlawfully deducted the amount from 36 suppliers over a roughly two-year period from January 2021.
In 2016 Nissan became the first automotive company in the world to create a vehicular propulsion system powered by a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) run by bio-ethanol. Nissan is now applying this SOFC development experience to stationary power generation systems.
The commission will demand Nissan take measures to prevent a recurrence of the underpayments, the public broadcaster NHK said on Monday. "We're currently waiting for final results from the commission," the Japanese automaker said in a statement, declining to comment further on the investigation.
The deal could close this month, said the sources, who asked not to be identified because the talks are ongoing and have not been finalized.

Local communities have been facing several mobility challenges, such as driver shortages, which are a result of an ageing population. With this service, Nissan will provide a broad range of new services that enable free movement, the company said.
Dacia will launch the new version of Spring EV on February 21. The France-based automaker plans to introduce a Made in India EV by 2027. The new Spring EV is expected to come to India as the Kwid EV. Other upcoming electric cars in India include Maruti Suzuki eVX, Tata Curvv, Skoda Enyaq, Kia EV9, and Mahindra XUV e8.
Renault said it would propose a dividend of 1.85 euros (USD 1.98) for 2023, up from a payout of 0.25 euro for 2022, joining U.S. automakers Ford and General Motors in giving more cash to investors.
