Preliminary figures from state-owned enterprises show that diesel sales in India decreased for the second month in a row in September, as rains reduced demand and halted industrial activity in several parts of the nation. While diesel sales declined year on year in the first half of September at three state-owned fuel outlets, petrol sales increased slightly.
Demand for diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country -- accounting for about two-fifths of the total demand, fell 3.7 per cent to 7.1 million tonnes in June compared to the year-ago period.

Gasoil, or diesel, accounts for about two-fifths of refined fuel consumption in India and is directly linked to industrial activity. India's factory activity expanded at its quickest pace in more than four months in April.
Demand for diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country accounting for about two-fifths of the demand, soared over 15 percent to 3.45 million tonnes in the first half of April when compared to a year ago.
Petrol sales decreased by 1.4 per cent to 1.22 million tonnes in the first half of March when compared with the same period of last year. Sales fell 0.5 per cent month-on-month, the data showed.
India's fuel demand witnessed the sharpest rebound in February as petrol and diesel consumption rose by double digits after a winter lull in the previous month, preliminary industry data showed on Wednesday. Petrol sales of state-owned fuel retailers jumped 12 per cent to 2.57 million tonne in February, as compared to 2.29 million tonne of consumption in the same period of last year.
In December, petrol sales increased 8.6% to 2.76 million tonnes from consumption of 2.54 million tonnes in the same month last year. Sales were 23.2% greater than pre-pandemic December 2019 and 13.3% higher than COVID-affected December 2020.
Diesel, the most used fuel in the country, posted a 27.6 per cent rise in sales in November to 7.32 million tonnes, as compared to the same month last year.
Petrol sales soared 13.2 per cent to 2.65 million tonnes in September when compared to 2.34 million tonnes of consumption in the same month last year. Diesel, the most used fuel in the country, posted a handsome 22.6 per cent rise in sales in September to 5.99 million tonnes when compared to the same month last year.
Petrol sales, which had dipped 5 per cent in July, increased 5.8 per cent to 2.81 million tonnes in August when compared with 2.66 million tonnes of demand in the previous month.
